Matrix Organizational Design
The Structure of an organization is driven by the paradigms in place during design. Today’s organizations were designed based on old paradigms of management. Two of these paradigms include a belief that authority is needed to get work done and if you optimize the parts of an organization the whole organization will be optimized. This perpetuates a focus on vertically optimized organizations.
Using the principles of New Matrix Management our expert Organizational Development facilitators follow the MTA organizational development process to design an organization that is horizontally focused and optimized to deliver the results of the strategic plan.

- Identification of Operational Business Processes:
- During this step, the team identifies the highest level process that deliver your products and/services to the external customers. The facilitator will work with the group to identify all the external customers and ensure that all processes that deliver the organizational mission are identified and mapped.
- Mission related goal setting for business processes
- Once the highest level processes that deliver the mission, it is necessary to set goals for each process that starts the horizontal alignment process.
- If based on the Readiness Assessment, these goals exist, our facilitators confirm they are focused properly to create alignment across the organization versus within functional silos.
- Goal Decomposition and Innovation Portfolio Creation
- Starting with the common process goals from the previous step, sub goals are identified and then further decomposed until innovation projects that will continually push the organization forward are identified.
- To complete the process, technology data, resource data and other strategic initiatives are considered to complete the portfolio creation.
- Horizontal Governance Council Creation
- Once the portfolio is created, it is time to structure the cross-functional councils that will govern the work within the portfolio(s) to ensure that all work is given the attention it needs to be executed.
- Accountability and Performance Management System Design
- Based on the Readiness Assessment, the group will determine the gaps between the current culture of accountability and the new proactive accountability.
- In accordance with the principles of accountability and the goals of the organization, the performance management system is designed to drive team and individual performance versus individual performance only.
